The SPEAR System

The study of human movement as it relates to violence, fear, and aggression

The Bullying Problem

Wouldn’t you want permission to stand up for yourself?

Picture this…

Your child comes home from school looking frustrated, defeated, and sad. You ask them how their day was, and they just say “fine.” Next thing you know, they’re walking up the stairs to their room.

A few minutes later, you go check on them and see them lying on their bed, face buried in the pillow. You ask if they’re okay, seeing them look up with tears streaming down their face.

At that moment, you know something’s not right. So, you decide to pry just a little bit.

“Did something happen at school?” you ask.

“No, yeah, I guess…” they say.

“What’s going on?” you reply.

“Johnny and his friends keep picking on me, pushing me around, and telling me I’m stupid.” They continue: “I wanted to do something, but I didn’t want to be a tattle tale or get in trouble.”

Sound familiar?

This is all too common in today’s society… Kids are more worried about getting in trouble than they are about standing up for themselves: and it’s destroying their self-esteem.

Enter:

The SPEAR System

Coach Tony Blauer created the SPEAR System back in the 70s and 80s after realizing that all of his martial arts training didn’t work in a real sudden ambush. Since then, he’s dedicated his life to learning the psychology, physiology, and physics behind the human body and brain, and figuring out how we can use that to protect ourselves from danger.

Most martial arts and self-defense systems out there teach kids “moves” they “should” be able to use to protect themselves from bullies and others trying to harm them. However, when your child is scared, anxious, and unsure of themselves, are they really going to be able to pull off those complex motor-skills?

The SPEAR System is genetically wired and behaviorally inspired, meaning it starts with “what does the body want to do prior to training?” Coach Blauer took that question and ran with it, and the SPEAR System was born.

By incorporating the SPEAR System into our curriculum and programming, we help your child build the skills to:

  1. Detect bullies and avoid potentially dangerous situations

  2. Defuse bullies to calm them down before the situation becomes violent

  3. Defend themselves to get home safely if they have no other choice

They will also learn that they have permission to protect themselves and NO ONE has the right to touch them if they don’t consent. While they may get “in trouble” at school for fighting back, we know you’ll never be upset with them for prioritizing their safety and getting home to you.

If this resonates with you, your child may benefit from our program! Fill out the form below to discuss how we can work together.

How is SPEAR different from Martial Arts?

The SPEAR System is not a martial art. However, we incorporate the system into our martial arts programming so that kids build a well-rounded skill set not only physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well.

SPEAR helps us integrate the science and physiology behind the human body and how we can move more-desirably, but also tools to manage anxiety, fear, and stress so your child builds the capacity to control their emotions versus trying to avoid or bottle them up.

Traditional martial arts teach “moves,” whereas SPEAR helps us teach concepts and principles to improve decision making and critical thinking under duress.

Currently, we don’t have a “home” location we’re running classes out of. BUT, there are a few ways you can begin training in this system and start your child on the path towards achieving their own personal excellence:

  • Work with me privately or in small group classes (we will collaborate to find a neutral site for these sessions)

  • Bring our after-school program to your child’s school - contact your administrators and help us set this up

  • Check out the Bully Awareness Workshop below and contact me regarding setting one up for your child’s class, youth group, friend group, sports team, and more!
